Social Work and Genocide: Lessons from Srebrenica. (Alma Mustafic, Utrecht – Netherlands/Bosnia)
On July 11, the world commemorates the Srebrenica genocide—a crucial moment for social workers to reflect on its impact and relevance to their profession. This session will explore the definition and complexities of genocide, the role of social workers in supporting survivors, and the ethical challenges they face. By understanding the past, social workers can better equip themselves to address trauma, resilience, and justice in their future practice.
Alma Mustafic (1981) is an educational scientist and lecturer-researcher affiliated with the research group „Access to Justice“ at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, where she teaches about the Srebrenica genocide. Her expertise lies in human rights education, community development an genocide, subjects deeply rooted in her personal history as she survived the Srebrenica genocide in 1995. Beyond education an research, she also uses art as theatre, film and podcast to convey her message. Due to her societal impact, Alma was appointed a Freedom Ambassador for 80 Years of Freedom in 2023. In 2024, she became the first Human Rights Ambassador of the city of Utrecht.
