Practical education

Hands-on practical education

At our university, students are trained to become highly qualified professionals who are well prepared to embark on their respective careers. The hands-on practical education makes sure students don’t study detached from the labour market. As a former college turned into a university of applied sciences, we can look back on decades of experience in successfully combining a scientific approach with practical work experiences.

Our practice-oriented programme involves:

  • Practical semesters and practical work periods have been integrated into our Bachelor programmes. This allows you to gain professional experience while you are still studying.
  • All internship periods include comprehensive guidance for students, while also building on the expansion of theoretical knowledge related to the respective fields. Students receive on-site support as well as assistance from visiting tutors during the practical semester. Supervision and practice-related lectures also form an integral part. Throughout this process, the students’ own professional identity, work situation, learning progress, desired changes and also problems would be monitored and discussed.
  • There will be a constant exchange regarding issues related to institutional needs, its concerns and questions, which in turn will be incorporated into the teaching process.
  • We maintain good and long-established contacts to many employers: e.g. in economics, in municipalities, in church institutions, in charities and non-statutory welfare organisations and in development aid.
  • As a recurring feature, our programmes combine theory with concrete practical experiences gained in internships, project work and exercises. Different to a dual qualification programme, the practical periods largely contribute to developing competencies related to specialized science areas.
  • We place great importance on staying up to date on course-related research results and on discussing them in the respective study programmes, while practice-related issues taken up by our tutors can also be incorporated into the research assignments.
