SUMMARY:Educating Youth for Reconciliation amid Ongoing Conflict in Africa
 ’s Great Lakes Region
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nEducating Youth for Reconciliation amid Ongoing Con
flict in Africa’s Great Lakes Region(Kazuyuki Sasaki- Protestant Univers
ity of Rwanda)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis lecture examines an experient
ial approach to reconciliation education developed through an intensive un
iversity course in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Pro
testant University of Rwanda. The course brings together students from Rwa
nda\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Burundi\, and other conflict-
affected countries in Africa’s Great Lakes Region (GLR) and beyond. Comb
ining academic discussion with personal reflection\, visits to genocide me
morials\, facilitated dialogue\, and direct encounters with genocide survi
vors and former perpetrators who have walked journeys towards reconciliati
on\, the course encourages students to confront their own wounds\, fears\,
prejudices\, and perceptions of those they regard as enemies. Reconciliat
ion is understood as a transformation of identities and relationships. Stu
dents are encouraged to move beyond narratives centered exclusively on the
ir own group’s victimhood and to acknowledge the suffering and humanity
of ‘the other’\, while still affirming the validity of one’s own pai
nful experiences. The lecture argues that education for reconciliation req
uires more than theoretical discussion and relevant case studies. It must
create carefully facilitated spaces for meaningful encounter\, emotional r
eflection\, critical dialogue\, and the development of empathy. It also co
nsiders the challenges posed by psychosocial trauma\, contested historical
narratives\, and continuing conflict in the GLR.\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nKa
